Synopsis:

On the stagecoach from Tonto to Lordsburg ride five passengers. They are: a mother to be, a gambler, an over the hill alcoholic doctor, a saloon girl and a whiskey salesman. On its way out of Tonto, the bank manager gets on. A few miles further on the Ringo Kid (John Wayne) gets on, he has a score to settle in Lordsburg

As the journey progresses the Ringo Kid and the saloon girl Dallas (Claire Trevor) become involved with each other. The alcoholic doctor befriends the whiskey salesman, sampling much of his wares. The gambler befriends the mother to be.

When the coach stops to change horses they learn that Geronimo and his Apaches are on the warpath. The mother to be has her baby delivered by the now sober Doctor. Indian fires are seen in the distance. The stagecoach leaves, it becomes a race against time. Soon it is surrounded by blood thirsty Apaches. The passengers fire at the Indians. The chase continues through Monument Valley. When all seems lost and the ammunition is going to run out, a troop of cavalry arrives and drives the Apaches away.

The stagecoach arrives in Lordsburg. The Ringo Kid goes to settle the old score. Dallas waits for him. Shots ring out. A wounded Ringo Kid returns.
