Synopsis:
The end of the Civil War finds Thomas Dunson (John Wayne) master of a vast cattle domain in Texas, but because the South is so impoverished there is no market for his herd. He decides to head, with his foster-son Matthew Garth (Montgomery Clift), the first cattle drive over the now-famous Chisholm Trail, past the Red River, into Missouri. The way is filled with hardship for both man and beast, and eventually Dunson and Garth quarrel bitterly, with Garth deserting Dunson, who has lost control of the drive. Garth changes the direction from Missouri to Abilene, Kansas, where the new railroad will open up a huge market with the East.
Here the infuriated Dunson catches up with his foster-son and they fight it out with bare fists until Tess Millay (Joanne Dru) with whom Garth is in love, patches things up between them. Dunson starts things right now by making Garth a full partner in the Dunson ranch.
